ADVANCED SPECIALISED TRANSFERS FOR ADULTS & CHILDREN EDUCATION

WORKSHOP INFORMATION: This one day workshop is designed for Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists who wish to further their knowledge and skills with regards to hoists, slings and transfers for people with disabilities. This workshop is suitable for therapists wishing to become advanced prescribers, including Green prescribers aspiring to become Amber prescribers, Amber prescribers aspiring to become Red prescribers and for Red prescribers to enable skill maintenance. This workshop will be presented by Sarah Macneil, Occupational Therapist and SWEP Clinical advisor.

On completion of this workshop participants will be able to:


  • Summarise SWEP's expectations of Advanced/ Amber & Red prescribers in specialised transfer equipment prescription
  • Use advanced - level clinical reasoning and decision making skills to select and justify specialised transfer equipment prescription,
  • Understand the relevance and application of legislation and standards in assistive technology prescription
  • Make specialised transfer equipment prescriptions at an advanced level,
  • Access a range of resources and research to support specialised transfer evidence-based assistive technology prescriptions, and
  • Participate in the competency process

This workshop will cover:

  • Client, environmental and task considerations in hoist selection
  • Differences between mobile and ceiling hoists
  • Comparison between types of mobile hoists
  • Ceiling hoist options
  • Selecting a ceiling track configuration 
  • Sling types, materials and application
  • Bath hoist options
  • Needs and considerations of specific client groups including paediatrics, bariatrics, clients with dysplastic hips, amputees
  •  Key points for carer training

Please note a range of hoists, slings and transfer assistive technology will be available to view and trial during the workshop.
