SWEP Communique - Motorised Mobility Devices Resources

6 May 2021

A suite of practical information resources is now available to support health professional conversations about motorised mobility devices and to guide clinical management.

These have been developed with extensive stakeholder involvement, including representation from SWEP on the Stakeholder Advisory Group.

Each year almost 1,000 Australians are admitted to hospital for a possible mobility scooter-related injury

Consumer Resources

The updated "Guide to choosing and using mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs" helps consumers:

  • Decide whether a motorised mobility is right for themChoose a device to best suit their needs
  • Use the device effectively and safely
  • Access public transport
  • Know where to go to get more information and assistance
Topics are also covered in a series of fact sheets, including one explaining the importance of formal user assessment and education, and the role of occupational therapists and GPs.

Checklists are a helpful feature - stepping through the decision-making process, and encouraging users to reflect on their needs, mobility goals and capabilities. Checklists support carers and family members to make informed decisions and consider personal/road safety risks, especially for those no longer able to drive.

Health Professional Resources

Through a major piece of work undertaken with Austin Health and Occupational Therapy Australia, OTs and other health professionals can access a comprehensive guide to clinical management of motorised mobility device users.

Hosted on the OTA website, the resource steps through the care pathway including referral, initial assessment, device recommendation, education and training, communication and ongoing monitoring.
