SWEP Communique - Continence Aids Program November 2023

Dear Practitioner,

Firstly, we extend our gratitude to continence practitioners for assisting our consumers with their continence needs.  We have been fortunate in recent times to fund all new and existing consumers with no wait times within our annual capped budget.

Unfortunately, due to increased demand and the high volume of applications we are currently receiving we are now re-introducing a waitlist. 

When applying for continence funding kindly note the following: 

  • Applications for all new consumers to the program, will be triaged in line with our Priority of Access Guidelines and waitlisted accordingly.
  • All new products should first be trialled by the consumer before applying for SWEP funding. This ensures the correct size and effectiveness of the product is determined, preventing loss of annual subsidy on incorrect products, unnecessary returns, and re-orders.
  • Commonwealth Government Homecare Package (HCP) recipients receiving level 3 & 4 are not eligible for SWEP funding.
  • Consumers accessing SWEP may also be able to access supports from other programs such as the Continence Aids Payment Scheme - Services Australia. For further information visit the Australian Government Continence Aids Payment Scheme website
  • Consumers are required to undertake a review with their practitioner every two years with a new application submitted to confirm ongoing supply, additional products, or changes to prescription with the exception of washable products.
  • Washable products: 
    • have a per annum recommended quantity;  
    • after the initial application, SWEP will not fund washable items on an ongoing basis, without a new application and clinical justification.  

Attached here is a guide on using our Portal. It has useful information on how to update your details and load an application.  There is also information about the 'copy' function which allows you to copy the details from a previously submitted application for the same consumer.  Practitioners are required to review all transferred information including pre-screening questions before submission of the application.
