SWEP Prescriber Communique - Changes to Registration Framework

16 February 2018

As you will be aware SWEP has made a lot of changes to our Prescriber Registration and Credentialing Framework over the past 12 months. The Framework was implemented to enhance the professional governance and accountability related to the prescription of Assistive Technology. Many of the revisions and changes have been as a result of the invaluable feedback our prescribers, health care employers and professional bodies have provided. Subsequently our Framework continues to strengthen.

In the coming months we will be making some further updates that we are excited to share with you. This includes the following;

  • Introduction of our new Clinical Advisor Panel. Our Clinical Advisors and their biographies will be uploaded here shortly - https://swep.bhs.org.au/clinical-advisors.php
  • We will be advertising shortly for Subject Matter Experts to join our panel with expertise in Rehabilitation Engineering, Recreational Therapists and Education
  • Providing prescribers and employers with articulated learning objectives / performance criteria for in-house training programs to be recognised
  • Introduction of a prescriber endorsement process so that a higher level prescriber or supervisor can endorse the upgrade or re-credentialing of a prescriber based on their knowledge and observation of that individual
  • Changes to our online registration / upgrade and re-credentialing process to make this as intuitive, efficient and simple as possible for our prescribers. In the interim if prescribers wish to upgrade or re-credential all you need to complete and submit is Appendix 3 - https://swep.bhs.org.au/files/289/SWEP_The_Standard.pdf#page=19
  • Updating our online orientation and induction module for all new prescribers to complete and the provision of additional useful information on our website

We are continuing to receive applications for endorsement of education and these can be located here - https://swep.bhs.org.au/swep-endorsed-education.php

Review of our current triage tools, scripts and clinical justification supplements to provide more prompts and explanations of information required for a successful script as well as provision of some "best practice" examples on the SWEP website

Review of the current AT categories and complexity criteria to ensure these are still accurate

We will communicate with you as each of these are rolled out but wanted to acknowledge the valuable feedback and intended changes coming soon!

Kind regards,
Donna Markham
